新喀里多尼亞檀香是白檀精油和澳洲檀香是不同的品種，香氣更加深沉，卻沒有印度檀香的沉重感，比較輕盈，一直是許多國度在重要儀式裡最珍貴上乘的香氣。
印尼東古邦、斯里蘭卡、東帝汶等地都有原生白檀。在第一次大戰之前，古邦白檀不僅木材早以聞名全球，更是早年製香業最珍貴的檀粉來源。
